[Travel Report] What is Oman International Airport? Official Name & Highlights
The airport is clean and modern.

For some reason, it’s widely known online as “Oman International Airport,” but the conclusion is:
the official name is “Muscat International Airport.”
Well… that’s a bit anticlimactic.

Still, the name “Oman International Airport” makes it oddly memorable.
In this article, I’ll share the highlights and practical tips based on my actual visit!
It’s actually my first time writing an article focused solely on an airport.
What is Oman International Airport? (Official Name Warning)
Let’s start with a common point of confusion.
The airport is located in Muscat, the capital of Oman in the Middle East, so:
“Oman International Airport” (nickname / internet meme)
“Muscat International Airport” (official name)
It’s similar to how Tokyo International Airport is commonly called Haneda Airport, not “Japan International Airport.”
Honestly, no one really gets confused about this…
When people think of Middle Eastern hub airports,
they often imagine massive ones like Dubai or Doha, but:
– It’s slightly more compact
– Easier to navigate
– Exceptionally clean
– And very modern
Rather than a “cold, mechanical airport,” it has a modern and open design,
making it quite photogenic depending on how you shoot it.

What Does the Airport Smell Like?
A mix of:
– Dry air
– Perfume scents (from duty-free shops)
– Spices (from restaurants)
creates a unique atmosphere that instantly makes you feel,
“Yep, I’m in the Middle East.”
It’s definitely not the kind of smell you might expect from the name!
In fact, it’s quite pleasant.
One particularly famous perfume brand here is “Amouage.”
It’s very expensive, but:
– Long-lasting scent
– Rich, Middle Eastern character
makes it a great (if pricey) souvenir.
If you’ve got the budget, that is.
There are also over a dozen Muscat Duty Free shops,
offering cosmetics, alcohol, tobacco, chocolate, electronics, and more.

Excellent Facilities
This is where the airport really shines for travelers.
– Free Wi-Fi → Fast and reliable
– Charging spots → Everywhere
– Signage → Easy to understand in English
Even if you don’t speak English, translation apps make it manageable anyway.
However, AU’s international data roaming did not work (as of 2025),
so getting a local SIM at the airport is recommended.
The lounges are also excellent:
– Quiet
– Spacious sofas
– Shower facilities
Even if you’re not flying business class, you can pay to access them,
making them a great place to relax before your flight.
The waiting areas are also very spacious.

A budget-friendly option: McDonald’s
This is the popular Middle East–exclusive menu item “McArabia.”
Since it’s halal, there’s no pork—only chicken or beef.
– Uses pita bread (flatbread)
– Black sesame-like seeds on the surface
– Filled with lettuce and chicken
It tastes like a slightly exotic teriyaki chicken sandwich.
The bread can feel a bit dry and the sauce somewhat plain,
so it’s decent but not particularly impressive.
